Well, quite some time that nothing happened – at least in the blog.
But now it is time to prepare for spring 2011. The bike(s) first and hopefully me following a short time later.
I got a voucher for a local bike store for christmas last year and so I searched the web for some parts to improve on the Trek 1.2. I decided that I would like to change the following parts:
- the handlebar tape from black to white for optical reasons
- the brakes from shimano sora to shimano ultegra
- the pedals from no-name to shmano 105
I looked for some used brakes in bike forums and foun some pretty nice shimano ultegra 6600-sl in black. I was very convinced that the black brakes would improve the look of the red-black-white 1.2. I bought them and received them without any problems.
Just as a statement for private2private deals on the internet. It is not so unusual that I buy little things on the internet and I literally almost nevder encounter any problems. Not regarding the payment and delivery, nor the quality of the products.
I searched the web also for some retro style pedals with toe-clips. I think I already posted that I drive my bike to work and also use it for some duathlon style sports. So toe-clips is ideal for me since I can ride the bike with normal sneekers and do not have to spend the extra money for special bike shoes.. I personally also assume that I am faster while changing from biking to running. But since evreryone else rides clip-ins I think I might be wrong
Anyway, I brought some really nice shimano 105 pedals with retro style toe-clips and I finally brought the bike to the bike-shop and asked them to pimp it up….
They called me the following day and told me something that really suprised me. The white handlebar tape was on – fine. The pedals were mouned -fine. But the brakes I bought just do no fit. They told me that the length of brakes has changed over the time and that all the new brakes, like the shimano ultegra 6600 I bough have a length of 49mm. But the frame of the Trek 1.2 requires to have brakes that are 57mm long. To make it short, the ultegras do not fit.
I was really shocked since you can read everywhere that things really changed over time, but the Trek 1.2 is a 2009 (model 2010) so I was really sure that all modern bikeparts would fit. But to make it short again, the brakes do not.
They constructed the Trek 1.2 frame so, that it is also possible to add fenders. That is very cool on the one hand – e.g. if you would like to take the Trek as a winter bike, but it requires space as well and omits you from adding any of the modern brakes from the shimano series to the bike.
Actually you cannot buy any 105, ultegra or dura-ace brake in length 57mm.
So I leave it for the pedal and the hadlebar tape for the moment. The guys from the shop also lifted the handlebar one spacer (since I felt it was a bit too low) and adjusted the brakes. The brakes are really awesome compared to before.
See a pic of the result here. (you maybe cannot see the 105 pedals, but believe me, they’re there
